MicroNeedling

Pre and post care guide

As you prepare for your MicroNeedling session, we have some advice and tips for making the most of your treatment. Below you will find practical advice alongside healthy suggestions to help you achieve the transformation you’re hoping for.

What to expect

Microneedling treatments done with ‘boosters’ will require less downtime than PRP MicroNeedling. The inflammatory effects should only last 24-48 hours before subsiding.

  • Immediately after the treatment, your skin will appear to be red almost like a sunburn. The redness will subside within 2-3 hours but you may still be slightly pink for the next couple of days.

  • Other common short-term side effects include itching, discomfort, pinpoint bleeding or bruising, scabbing, and darkening of the treated area.

  • The skin may look and feel like sandpaper.

These effects generally last 2-7 days as the treated skin flakes off and is replaced by new tissue.

While adverse reactions are extremely rare, there is a possibility of temporary side effects including but not limited to: infection, scarring, skin and tissue necrosis, herpes simplex outbreak, hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), and hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin). Darkening or lightening of the skin usually fades within 6 months, but in rare cases, could be permanent. This reaction is more common in patients who are tan or who have darker skin tones. It can result or worsen when treated areas are exposed to the sun too soon following treatment. This risk can be minimized by avoiding sun exposure for 4 weeks before and after treatment and by adhering to pre and post-treatment instructions.

the days before your laser treatment

01. Prepare

before your session

  • Discontinue use of Retin A, Retinols, Vitamin A creams, P50, and other topical medications for 3-5 days before your MicroNeedling treatment.

  • If you are planning to receive Botox/Dysport/Xeomin, make sure that you give yourself at least 2 weeks post injections, before receiving your Micro-Needling procedure. If you choose to do injections after MicroNeedling treatment, we recommend that you to wait until skin is healed before booking your injection session.

  • If you are taking a blood thinner, fish oil, aspirin, or any other medication and you have the tendency to bleed easily while on, please let us know. If you are under a physician’s care and need to discontinue your medication for a few days, always speak with your physician before stopping your medications.

  • If you bruise easily, you may consider taking Arnica pre and post-procedure to alleviate bruising and swelling. Take Arnica 24 hours before treatment and continue for 3 days after treatment following the label’s instructions.

The Day of

  • Prior to the MicroNeedling treatment, a topical numbing agent is applied to the treatment area (unless you are allergic to any ingredients) however some discomfort is to be expected. Please let us know in your intake forms if you are allergic to Lidocaine.

  • If you have a history of cold sores, we suggest taking an anti-viral prior to the treatment.

after and between your sessions

02. Post-Care

Getting the best results

  • No sunscreen 48-72 hours following treatment depending on depth. Please ask if you you aren’t sure how long you should wait.

  • Bring a hat and scarf with you to your appointment to drive home to avoid sun exposure.

  • No makeup for 24 hours.

  • Wash the face 6 hours after treatment or before bedtime. Use a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil or Cerave. Gently massage the face with lukewarm water.

  • Apply a Hyaluronic Acid serum 3 times/day for the next 72 hours. Apply to damp skin so as not to rob the skin of TEWL.

  • After 72 hours, you can resume your normal skincare routine.

  • If you are treated with Stem Cells and Growth Factor, a complimentary aftercare kit is given, please apply morning and night.

  • ALWAYS wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to protect the new layer of skin from hyperpigmentation.

  • Avoid alcohol-based toners.

  • For at least 48-72 hours post-treatment, do NOT use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula), P50, or any active skincare.

  • We do not recommend cleaning the face with the brush or using hot water, or any abrasive movement to the skin.

  • It is highly advisable that you do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil because these will interfere with the body’s natural inflammatory process that is serious for your skin transformation. The use of over-the-counter pain medications that are not anti-inflammatory is recommended only as needed for any discomfort.

  • Eating fresh pineapple helps heighten the healing process as well as help with any skin discomfort.

Activities to Avoid

  • Avoid working out and swimming for 72 hours as sweating can lead to adverse reactions.

  • It is extremely important to stay out of the sun, tanning, and sunbathing for at least 10 days to avoid risk of hyperpigmentation.

  • No alcohol 48 hours prior

  • No alcohol afterwards to avoid a ‘hangover’ feeling and dehydration

  • Avoid sugar

  • Avoid dairy for 24 hours beforehand

  • Do not eat a high sodium meals 72 hours pre of post treatment session
