Double Cleansing: do you really need to wash your face twice?
You’ve probably heard about women who wash their faces twice and you may be wondering- why?
Could it actually be worth the time it takes to repeat your cleansing routine? The short answer - Yes. If you wear makeup or live in a city environment, your skin could totally benefit from the additional round of cleansing. Double cleansing each evening will also brighten any dullness, ultimately lifting the complexion.
WHY
Double cleansing gets rid of the grime, and buildup on your face that has collected throughout the day.
You may think your cleanser is already doing this, but in some cases, one wash is just taking surface build-up, and not able to go deeper and penetrate into the skin. Products that we use every day, like sunscreen, can build up on the skin and create a barrier for our skincare. Makeup, pollutants, and sebum can also prevent penetration if not properly washed away. When you double cleanse, both the first layer of sebum, make-up, sunscreen, and the deeper layers of pore bacteria, which can all aggravate acne, are removed.
So how do you double-cleanse?
HOW
There are a few ‘standards’ when you are adding a second wash to your cleansing ritual.
First, and most importantly, you should be using two different cleansers. Repeating the cycle with the same cleanser won’t yield the flawless skin you’re expecting. Your first cycle should use a milky or oil-based cleanser, like Biologique Recherche’s Lait U. This will help break down oil-based impurities while being gentle on the skin. The second cycle should bring in a gentle, water-based cleanser like Auteur’s Enzyme Cleanser. The combination is the perfect preparation for your serums and creams- allowing them to penetrate more fully.
