Ice Cold Beauty: Cold Therapy, Beauty Frigdes, and CryoFacials

A splash of cold water, cryo sticks, and beauty fridges… Chilling your face is the not-so-new beauty secret you need to know about.

Have you ever chilled your face roller or splashed your face with cold water to give your skin a boost? Well, turns out that cold beauty does more than give a brisk boost to our skincare routines. It gives physiological signals that provide some amazing benefits to your skin and overall health. So that cold splash at the end of a shower, or that cute beauty fridge you’ve seen on Instagram may actually be your next best beauty ritual.

What iscold therapy”?

Cold therapy is the use of chilled products, tools, or therapies in skincare routines. It reduces inflammation and swelling while reducing pore size and reducing the appearance of broken capillaries. Much like chilled eye masks or cucumber slices, chilled eye creams can help to de-puff the sensitive under-eye area. But the truth is, your entire face can benefit from the refreshing chill- tightened skin, reduced redness, and instant radiance. When practiced daily, the results can become less temporal and develop a refreshed daily appearance.

Why You Need More Chill

The results of cold therapy - either by product or tools - can improve acne, inflammation, dullness, jowling, and sagging. Also, it just feels good. The process feels refreshing and helps to brighten your mood and your skin. Some people like a cold shower to feel alive- we prefer a cold slathering of cream across our visage.

Skin Benefits

Reduces inflammation

When you have an injury or swelling in the body and your doctor instructs you to ice it—it’s the same concept, but now we're using it for aesthetic purposes. Skin conditions like acne and rosacea can benefit from cold therapy because of its ability to reduce the inflammation the skin, which is a key trigger to both conditions.

Reduces pore size

Skin icing minimizes the appearance of enlarged pores and may help to unclog pores that appear larger due to debris and excess sebum. Icing tones the face, making your skin (and foundation) look smoother.

Exfoliates the skin

A cryofacial can help remove the outer layer of dead skin cells and stimulate new ones underneath to grow in a more even, smooth distribution

Promote blood circulation

The cold temperature can constrict blood vessels, it can help with decreasing puffiness, thereby giving skin a healthier appearance.

Improving absorption of other products

Cooling the skin may help the actives of your skincare products absorb better. This is due to the cold temperature making the capillaries in the skin restrict, creating a “pulling” effect. Fatigued faces can look forward to a firming effect and stimulating feeling from the ice that helps eliminate toxins. It may also help ease the signs of wrinkles.

Soothes blemishes

Ice can help reduce swelling and the redness of pimples, and can also soothe irritated skin. And because swollen skin makes it difficult for topical creams to reach the bacteria inside the pores, icing may actually help antibacterial agents and topical antibiotics get into the pores since it exfoliates.

Mind and Body

Cold therapy on your face maybe just a fraction of the full ‘ice bath’ experience, but we think it has its own merits. If you are ready to take an ice plunge, we support that too! But maybe just start with ending your shower with a blast of cold water.

There’s more to cold therapy than glowing skin…

  • cold water blasts rev up our endorphin production

  • it gives you an all-natural high by activating sensory nerve pathways in the brain

  • some studies have found that it can fight depression and low mood states by lowering the temperature of the brain reducing inflammation

  • increases our natural energetic state – resulting in more energy and vibrancy

The Beauty Fridge

Untitled design (30).png

There are two primary benefits to storing your beauty arsenal in a fridge - for cold therapy benefits and to prevent bacterial growth.

We also suggest storing skincare tools in your fridge - we love the Biologique Recherche Cryosticks - for an easy way to incorporate cold therapy benefits into your routine even if you aren't able to spend on a beauty fridge. Chilled tools can activate the blood circulation, improve the nutrient uptake, increase cell oxygenation and rejuvenation.

Even if your end game isn't radiant skin (but why isn't it!?) the reason to store your water-based products in a fridge is obvious: bacteria. Bathrooms are steamy, moist, and warm. The resulting environment is perfect for bacterial growth. And even though most beauty is shelf-stable, that's before we dip our finger in dropping in additional water and whatever else. By storing products in a cooler, humidity-controlled space, they are less likely to develop bacterial growth that can cause spoiling and breakouts.

what SHOULD you put in your fridge

  • Eye masks and creams

  • Sheet mask - Masque PIGM 400 chilled is an absolute dream

  • Masks

  • Serums

  • Moisturizers

  • Facial toners

  • Facial mists

  • Facial tools

What NOT to put in your fridge

  • Clay-based products
These will become very hard & you may need a shovel to get the product out.

  • Oil-based products
The water and oil ingredients may separate and change the formulation of the product.

  • Facial oils
Some oils become solid at cooler temperatures. By chilling, you risk a change in the consistency.

Cryo Sticks

We love using Biologique Recherche’s cryo sticks as a way to bring cold therapy into our daily rituals. Smooth these iced globes over cremes, masques, and finishing serums to help products absorb more deeply and boost your glow.

tip: If you already have a jade roller or gua sha, try chilling it in the freezer for a few minutes before use.

03

Cold Water

If you’re using Biologique Recherche’s line of products, you should already be using cold water to wash and rinse your face. But even if your line doesn’t suggest using cold water, you should make the switch. It’s an easy way to boost your radiance with minimal effort.
