The Benzene Sunscreen Recall - What You Need to Know

sunscreen contamination

You know you need to wear sunscreen but what happens when 78 of 294 of your favorite sunscreens are lab tested to be contaminated with benzene.

We're looking at you…

Neutrogena, Sun Bum, Coppertone, Banana Boat, CVS brand, Walgreens brand, la Roche Posay, Aveeno, Babyganics, and Elta MD

...

Many of your favorite brands might be asked to recall their sunscreens by the FDA due to high levels of benzene. The ingredient has been linked to leukemia and cancer with repeat exposure... like if you were to layer it on every day for an entire summer.

And in this case, it's not intended to be in the sunscreen’s formulation. Benzene is a chemical derived from coal tar and is linked to skin irritation. It's not listed on the ingredient list; It's a contaminant. From the buyer's side, there's no way to look at the shelf and know which brands have been contaminated except for the brands listed by the lab that discovered the contamination.

knowledge is power.
You deserve to know what you're putting on your skin and the effects it may have.

So What Should You Do?

Wear Sunscreen! Don’t let this be the reason that you give up your SPF this summer. You won’t be able to look at your ingredient list to know if your product was contaminated, but you can use the list published below to cross-reference your spays and tubes against those found to be problematic.
